Bio for Charles Blakely

Sultry sounds infused with rich southern flavor, Blakely’s music takes the listener on an emotional journey tickling the soul and tapping on the heartstrings. Described by others as a “Gentle Giant” (because of his commanding physical stature and temperament), this veteran singer/songwriter delights in composing soulful melodies with playful lyrics. With the release of “Didn’t Wanna Wake Up From This Dream”, he establishes his place in the genre of Urban Rhythm & Blues.

A native of Dallas Texas, Charles E. Blakely’s love for music found expression after his family transferred to Rockford Illinois. At the age of nine, he joined the gospel quartet, Wings of Faith, and continued to hone his craft singing at various venues in the local area.

At the age of 15, Charles and his family moved to Rosston, Arkansas where he became a member of the Bright Stars of Bluff City.  He recorded his first gospel release “Oh Lord I Want To Be Close To Thee” with Champ Records in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1983, Blakely went on to sing with the likes of Spencer Taylor and the Highway QC’s.  This opportunity opened doors and initiated his interest in songwriting.  In 1984, gospel legend Willie Banks personally invited Blakely to become second lead singer of the Messengers after hearing his soul-stirring performance with the QC’s.  After the passing of Banks, Charles became the lead vocalist for the group.  He wrote and recorded a song with the Messengers he’d written in 1983, “Jesus Will Help You To Stand “, which received great reviews.  The Messengers recorded five CD’s which sold to thousands of fans worldwide.

Like many of the original soul singers who influenced him (Otis Retting, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Teddy Pendergrass, and Luther Vandross), Charles E. Blakely’s roots are also steeped in rich traditional gospel. As he continues his career with the debut of his Southern Soul album debuting in January of 2011, he is sure to capture the heart and soul of all who will listen.
